A month ago I put my name into the lottery drawing for the Big Sur Marathon that takes place in Monterey, CA in April. I have run one full marathon (26.2 miles) before and I thought it was a bucket list item – one and done. But training for that marathon went surprisingly well and the race went well albeit slower than I had hoped. Which leaves room for improvement, right?! Well now it’s been almost 2 years since my first full marathon and I got the urge to run Big Sur. One of my grad school friends ran it last year and says it’s totally worth it. This year it went to a lottery system because it is a very popular race. I figured ‘I’ll put my name into the lottery and then it’s still up to fate whether or not I have to start training for another full marathon’. Well shoot, fate has spoken. I started to have doubts in the past couple weeks about whether or not I should make this huge commitment – it will be expensive to train, register, fly, and stay and let’s remember I now live in Minneapolis where it will also be quite cold and snowy during the training months. BUT I do believe in fate (somewhat) and while my last marathon training was very challenging, it was mostly rewarding and enlightening. So maybe this is just the golden ticket I need to finally motivate myself to lose the 15 pounds I’ve been thinking about losing and to train harder and get stronger and have an AWESOME race come April.
