After 2 days in Florence, Italy, we took a day trip to see the Cinque Terre and a quick stop in Pisa.

I was so excited to see the Cinque Terre, which means “5 Towns”, on the coast of Italy. I had seen pictures and read blog posts and it looked beautiful! And luckily, it lived up to the expectations but if only we had more time there to really explore and to see all 5 towns.
From Florence, we took a train to Pisa, dropped off our luggage at the train station storage check, took a train to La Spezia, and finally a train to Vernazza, one of the 5 towns.
From there, we took the train to another of the 5 towns, Monterosso al Mare. There were a lot of people on the beach, we stopped and got gelato, and explored the town a bit.
Lastly, we took the train to Manarola, which was the best of the hill towns that we saw. We walked down through the shops and saw the colorful houses built into the hill. From there we walked up the walkway on the other side of the houses to get a bird’s eye view. It was beautiful!
You can see why the Cinque Terre is a popular tourist destination. It is absolutely stunning!
Right when we were coming back down into town after our little hike, it started to rain! So while our train wasn’t for another hour, we didn’t think we had enough time for a sit down meal (since meals in Italy take hours!) so we headed to the train station and took an earlier train back to Pisa.
We picked up our rental car that we would have for a couple days to drive through Tuscany and then headed over to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
From the tower, we walked over to some outdoor restaurants and had dinner. I had cannelloni, which didn’t photograph well but it was really good!
For dessert, we had panna cotta that was very good except the caramel sauce on top was not very good and we had profiteroles, homemade cream puffs with chocolate sauce, and they were pretty good.
After dinner, we strolled past the Leaning Tower of Pisa one last time.
Then we drove to the town of Lucca, where we stayed at Hotel Rex for the evening.
Stay tuned as next we travel into the hill towns of Tuscany!
