It’s been really hard for me to wait to write this post because Santorini was one of my favorite places we went in Europe. It was absolutely beautiful and definitely a photographer’s dream!

When we arrived to Santorini, our awesome island guide, Antonis, picked us up and drove us to the hotel. He gave us lots of information about what we could do on the island. We were staying at Hotel Akis, run by a friend of my great uncle’s. We dropped off our luggage and went across the street to eat lunch.
They even have Ben & Jerry’s in Santorini!
After lunch, we walked down to talk with Antonis about our plans for the day. The main thing I wanted to do on Santorini was to hike from Fira Town to Oia and be in Oia for the sunset. So my sister, cousin, and I took the city bus to Fira Town to begin our hike!
We got to Fira and followed the signs to the cable car to find the start of the hike. The path was right outside hotels in town, then went up and down a lot, sometimes on the edge of the cliff with no railing, and sometimes with barbed wire (keeping us safe?). The views from the hike were absolutely beautiful! I took lots of pictures!
We even saw some people riding donkeys on part of the hike. After about three and a half hours we arrived in Oia, walked through the town, took some pictures, then met up with the rest of the group. We waited for the sunset for a while and then at the last minute, decided we didn’t like our view and ran off to try and get a better spot.
The next day, we had breakfast at our hotel and then went down and chatted with Antonis about our day’s itinerary. We decided to take a bus to ancient Thira, which is a 5,000 year old city. The drive up to the city was like Lombard Street on the side of a cliff. The view of the island from the city was pretty spectacular.
After our Thira excursion, we went back to the hotel to freshen up and then headed out to Fira town to eat lunch with a view and to shop. We ate at Classico and had appetizers, meals, and drinks. Then we shopped around town and I found some beautiful paintings of the island.
After lunch, we took the city bus back to our hotel and then Antonis arranged us a ride to the oldest winery on the island, Roussos.
We had 6 samples of wine – 3 dry and 3 sweet. We also had bread, tomatoes, and nuts/seeds (chickpea-like) with raisins.
After the wine tasting, we walked around the abandoned old city, which we thought was totally abandoned but it is being revitalized because there were some homes that were occupied.
I just loved all the beautiful flowers, doors, and colors on the island!
We had dinner at a restaurant on Kamari Beach (black sand beach near our hotel) and enjoyed another sunset.
On our last day in Santorini, I was still determined to see where Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants had been filmed in Oia so my sister, cousin, and I took the city bus back to Fira and then to Oia to scope out the spot. Of course I had to take more pictures of the beautiful city of Oia.
The film spot I was looking for ended up being right by where we had been for the sunset! We walked down the donkey path, which was in the movie and saw the location for Lena’s grandparents house but unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture. I thought we would walk back up that way but we decided to find a different route back up the hill, which did not end up being any shorter, but did have less donkey poo!
We were able to see where Lena fell off the dock and Kostas jumped in to save her! <3
Look at those stunning colors!
We had to hurry back to the hotel to meet up with the rest of the family and get to the port for the ferry that was going to take us to our next and final stop, Paros.
Santorini was a wonderful dream – more beautiful than the pictures! I definitely recommend it and I can’t wait to go back one day!!
