This post is about the year I set the running goal to run a race every month. I like setting running goals because it gives me something to work towards and accomplish. This particular goal was fun because it pushed me to run races I would not have normally signed up for.
Since I am new to blogging I keep thinking that I need to write about things that are happening in my life RIGHT NOW. But there have been so many great things happen in my life that this blog (and all its wonderful readers) have yet to hear about. So I am going to write about the year 2012, when I ran a race every month. That was a good year for that goal because I also moved from Indiana to Utah during this time.
You can see on my Running Races Map all the races I have done up to this time, but here is the recap on my 2012 races (note I did miss January so I ran two races in June – it’s ok to be flexible with your goals, right?):
Hearts on Fire 5k (2-11-12), IN
Hot Dog Run 5k (3-31-12), IN – complete with hot dog eating contest (which I did not partake in). I got 4th in my age group at this race. So close but “almost doesn’t count”, right?
Southern Indiana Classic 8k (4-14-12), IN – first time running an 8k
Indy 500 Festival Mini Marathon (5-5-12), IN – this was DEFINITELY the hardest half marathon I’ve ever done due to the fact that I wasn’t planning to do this race. I had two friends who were planning to run/walk together and one backed out at the last minute so I stepped in. OUCH. I won’t do another half marathon with ZERO training again.
Met up with high school friends post-race:
Judges Run 5k (6-9-12), UT – flew out to Utah with my aunt Lynn to look for me a place to live once I began graduate school. Of course we did a race while we were there!
Nashville Muddy Buddy (6-23-12), TN – went to Nashville to run the Muddy Buddy adventure race with my sister. It was a HOT one.
Night Flight 4 miler (7-28-12), IN – This was a scary one! Running in the University of Southern Indiana woods at night – I didn’t love this one.
Sundae Run 5k (8-25-12), UT – my first race after moving to Salt Lake City for graduate school. Who doesn’t love eating an ice cream sundae after running? 🙂
Color Run 5k (9-15-12), UT – this is called the “Happiest 5k on the Planet” so of course I had to experience it now that I was in a large city that was having one (this was before they were happening everywhere). I was able to convince some of my new grad school classmates to join.
Running Scared 5k (10-27-12), UT – Halloween race.
Urban Nature 5k (11-3-12), UT – I am not sure if the course was longer than a 5k or if I got lost but I had my worst 5k time ever and YET I got 1st in my age group (it was a VERY small race). Sadly, since it was so small, there were no prizes for coming in first. Again, so close!
Girls on the Run 5k (12-1-12), UT – I volunteered as a Girls on the Run (GOTR) coach in Salt Lake City and at the end the coaches, girls, and buddy runners ran a 5k together.
That is my running races 2012 recap! I keep a running scrapbook with my race bibs, race information, and pictures so it is easy to keep track of all this information. And it was a lot of fun to look back at some of the races I’ve done.
What has been your favorite running race?
