Last week I ran two races – the Chocoholic 5k on Sunday and the Twin Cities Marathon 5k on Saturday.
Chocoholic Frolic 5k
The Chocoholic Frolic series currently takes place in TX, MN, and WI but they have more locations coming soon. I saw this race and knew I had to sign up – running + chocolate = yes please!
The packet pickup was on Friday at the Running Room store in St. Paul. That was super easy and I got my bib number plus this nice bright blue jacket plus a reusable tote bag.
The race started at 9am and the temp was around 60 and sunny. I overdressed wearing capri running tights and a long sleeve running shirt. I got to the race in time to do a shirt swap for a smaller size (they run big!) and then headed to the start line.
The race went well. It was a little warm and sunny and I really wish I had thought to wear sunglasses. I was also annoyed at the lack of race etiquette by the participants. This race had a lot of walkers, which I totally support, but a lot of them started right up front. The race started off crowded as usual but then we had to dodge to get around all the walkers. Note on race etiquette: if you’re walking a race, please start towards the back to let the runners go first. Thanks.
After the race, we got a finisher’s chocolate bar when we crossed the finish line. Then there was a table of goodies – cups of melted chocolate plus a variety of items to dip into the chocolate! Yum!
I also used my reusable tote to stock up on some of the food items they were giving out – cereal and bars.
Twin Cities Marathon 5k
The Twin Cities Marathon was this past weekend and they had a variety of events to choose from. I originally entered into the lottery for the 10 miler but wasn’t chosen so I signed up for the 5k.
When I went to the expo to get my race packet, there was no street parking available so I had to pay $10 to park. Paying to park is a big pet peeve of mine!
Included in my packet with my tshirt, I also got a sock cap (because it was going to be rather chilly!)
The morning of the race, I woke up and checked the temperature. Brrr!!!
I parked downtown at work and took the Light Rail 35 minutes to get to the race start in St. Paul. Despite the cold, it was a beautiful morning for a run!
I wore long pants, my short sleeve technical race shirt and a medium-weight jacket. I got a little warm on the run but ultimately I was happy I had the jacket on.
We even got medals for running the 5k!
It was a good race and as I was running the home stretch with the fall leaves and the Capitol building in front of me, I was very thankful to be out running! It reminded me why I pay money and wake up early to run these races.
On the train ride back to Minneapolis, I sat next to another runner who was in town from Atlanta to run the marathon. She travels around to races and tries to run one marathon and one half marathon per year. We had a nice time chatting and it made the train ride go by a little faster. That is one of the things I love about running – the people are so nice. Normally I would not want to chat with a stranger on a train but when we have running in common, it’s an easy conversation!
Also, the race started at 9am and my results were emailed to me at 10:41am. I think that is a record for fastest turnaround on results! And today (Monday) they sent an email with a video of me crossing the finish line! Very cool!
Have you ran any good races lately?
