This is a review of my first ever CrossFit class, which I took at Solcana CrossFit in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Studio: Solcana CrossFit
Location: 1915 E 22nd Street, Minneapolis MN 55404
What is CrossFit? According to Wiki, CrossFit is a branded fitness regimen, which was founded by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai in 2000. Promoted as both a physical exercise philosophy and also as a competitive fitness sport, CrossFit workouts incorporate elements from high-intensity interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, girevoy sport, calisthenics, strongman, and other exercises.
Solcana CrossFit: Their slogan is “The Power to Change. The Strength to do it.” Solcana Crossfit aims to embody the spirit of strong women by encouraging growth in all athletes, pushing their personal limits and celebrating unexpected strength. Their values include commitment, personal accountability, community and joyful health.
The workout: This was my first CrossFit workout ever. It was also “Bring a Friend Day” at Solcana CrossFit so maybe not the full-on typical CrossFit workout. We started out in a circle, introducing ourselves and saying something nice about our partner. Then we started with a few dynamic warm-up exercises before diving into the workout.
I was told this was a typical set-up for a CrossFit workout – a warm-up, strength component, and in this case, a mostly bodyweight partner workout series. Typical CrossFit would use more weights and be more strength focused but a lot of us were beginners so this was a good intro.
The partner workout was timed and my partner Wendy and I were the fastest duo! But I have to admit that was mostly due to Wendy because she is a CrossFit regular and fitness badass. I just tried to keep up as best I could.
Solcana CrossFit was very welcoming and everyone was very kind and encouraging throughout the workout. Once you finished your portion of the workout, it was time to cheer on those around you!
While Solcana CrossFit is for everyone, regardless of gender, they are very pro female empowerment and so they have this awesome mural painted on the wall.
What Else to Know: You will want to wear athletic shoes and comfortable fitness clothing. I would recommend bringing a water bottle but they also have a water fountain.
Bottom Line: My first taste of a CrossFit workout was great! Again, since this was “Bring a Friend Day,” I am not sure how a regular CrossFit class might differ, other than I imagine it to be harder. I have never been that interested in trying CrossFit before because I have heard such horror stories of people doing it poorly and getting seriously injured. That was not the case at Solcana CrossFit! I was encouraged to go at my own pace and capability while also being pushed to do my best. If you are going to try CrossFit for the first time, I would make sure to go somewhere you know has reputable trainers that can guide you on proper form and technique, especially as you advance into heavier weight lifting.
I definitely recommend checking out Solcana CrossFit!
